Living in Gosport

Gosport town dates back to the Doomsday Book of 1086 and is situated on a peninsular to the west of Portsmouth. It fronts Portsmouth Harbour and The Solent, with the Isle of Wight beyond.

Lee on the Solent is its immediate neighbour with its beaches, seafront pubs, and a wide selection of restaurants and cafes.

Traditionally Gosport has been associated with the Army and the Navy. With their withdrawal over the years the town has been left with their historic forts and barracks, which are now museums and places of interest to visit.

Also, the town has a great history of boat building, and the famous Camper and Nicholsons boat builders still remiains.

Entertainment & Sports

Gosport is now mainly a residential town and offers many attractions for the family to see, with the extra bonus of Portsmouth just a short ferry crossing away. Being on a peninsular there are some great walking areas around the beaches of Gilkicker and Stokes Bay and Portsmouth harbour.

Sailing is very popular, with several marinas in Portsmouth harbour for the larger boats, and sailing clubs for the dinghy sailor. During the year there are music festivals and other events. Also, a cinema complex is planned, being built during the summer of 2003. There is an ice rink and two swimming pools suitable for all the family.

Shopping

Gosport High Street became a shopping precinct during the late 80’s and has many well known stores as well as smaller individual shops. The other main shopping area is Stoke Road which still has traffic access.

Gosport holds a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the High Street, with stalls selling everything from flowers and clothes to furniture and DIY. Parking in Gosport is free and there are many restaurants and cafes to break up shopping excursions.

Communications

Gosport is four miles from neighbouring Fareham which provides acess to the M27 and a train station. Portsmouth also has rail links with direct services to London, Southampton and Brighton.

Gosport’s bus network covers all parts of the immediate area and beyond, with regularly scheduled services.

Schools & Hospitals

Gosport has two Sixth Form colleges, one at Bay House School and the other at St Vincent Technical College. Other schools of all age groups are well catered for. The Royal Hospital Haslar and the War Memorial Hospital are both in Gosport and between them offer a complete range of services.
