Living in Southsea

Southsea is part of the waterfront city of Portsmouth on the Hampshire coast. The city has been home to the British Navy for over 500 years and was also the birth place of Charles Dickens.

Portsmouth Harbour is currently undergoing major development. It is one of only twelve UK landmark projects chosen to mark the new millennium. When completed it will feature a 165m Millennium Tower, shopping and leisure facilities, restaurants and bars as well as some housing.

Southsea is a popular seaside resort and has about four miles of attractions and seafront promenade. It has all the usual entertainment and restaurant facilities you would expect in a busy resort as well of the wealth of attractions within the city.

Although part of a major city, Southsea is only about an hour from the open heath and woodland of the New Forest and the historic towns of Salisbury and Winchester.

Entertainment

There are two cinemas within a few miles of Southsea as well as the Kings Theatre which offers a wide range of theatrical and musical events. Southsea has a wide range of restaurants, pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Communications

Travelling by train from Southsea couldn't be easier. Southampton is only forty minutes away, Guildford and Basingstoke takes just over an hour and London Waterloo takes about 90 minutes.

There is easy access from Southsea onto to the M27 and A3(M) to London.

There are ferry sailings from Southsea to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, whilst the nearby port of Portsmouth has daily sailings to France, Spain and the Channel Islands.

Sport & Leisure

The area around Southsea has facilities for most sports; from sailing to golf to tennis. For those who prefer to be a spectator rather than a participant Portsmouth has its own football club in the national league.

The Wimbledon Park Sports Centre has a gymnasium and general sports hall whilst the Pyramids Centre houses a swimming pool and fun pool.

Southsea has a wide range of schools which cater for all age ranges and needs. Portsmouth is also home to one of the UK's largest university with over 14,500 students.
