Living in Reigate

Historical and enchanting Reigate is situated in the borough of Reigate and Banstead which stretches from the Greater London boundary and the boroughs of Croydon and Sutton to the north, to Crawley and Gatwick Airport to the south.

Predominantly open countryside, the borough has an area of 50 square miles and is traversed by the North Downs escarpment, which is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and the Greensand ridge.

Together these divide the chalk uplands of Banstead from the Weald to the south. The borough therefore enjoys a varied and attractive landscape, and many a natural beauty spot.

Amidst the countryside are several historical sites including the castle grounds which is just off the main High Street and an underground network of caves.

The country’s parks and open spaces achieved the second highest satisfaction rating in the country in a national poll. The largest park, Priory Park in Reigate offers 200 acres of space and woodland and was once home to Lord Howard Effingham, Admiral of the Fleet at the time of the Spanish Armada

In addition to being a place of great beauty, the park also has sporting areas and facilities for children, and during the summer plays host to a number of open air concerts and festivals.

Reigate town benefits from many quality boutiques, crafty type shops with designer furniture, art galleries, antique shops etc. Not the place if you are looking for High Street stores.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in Reigate. There is a fantastic range of restaurants ranging from Italian, French, Indian, Thai and Peking. Transport

Reigate owes much of its proximity to London and the major transport corridors - the London to Brighton railway and the M25 and M23.

Gatwick Airport and Heathrow Airport are highly accessible from Reigate via the M23 or M25.

Train services to Dorking and Guildford. Also services to Redhill for connections to Brighton, Croydon, London and Tonbridge.

Employment

More recently employment growth in the borough has resulted in significant numbers of people commuting into the borough to work. The attractiveness of the local environment and its accessibility to London, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports have been key to major inward investment with a number of international companies established headquarters within the borough.

Today Legal and General, Canon, Watson Wyatt, Toyota, Pfizer, Fidelity Investments and the First National Motor Insurance all have a base in the borough.

Banking, finance and insurance is the most important sector for Reigate and Banstead’s workforce. Public administration, education and health is the next most important sector.
