Living in Chichester
The beautiful cathedral city of Chichester is located on the River Lavant which flows through the South Downs in West Sussex. The city centre is a fantastical mix of architecture and charm with a mixture of high street shops and unique boutiques making it popular with both the local residents and visitors from the UK and beyond. It is a transport hub and the centre for culture in the region, with a Festival theatre and two art galleries. Nearby Chichester Harbour, together with the South Downs and the city walls, provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
Visitors and residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do in Chichester. Surrounded by the South Downs National Park and a short trip to the beautiful South Coast, the area has sites for history lovers including the Tudor Market Cross , Norman Cathedral, Fishbourne Roman Palace and The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. "Glorious" Goodwood is famous for its racing events, open air concerts and motor-sports. For those looking for some culture, The Festival Theatre is host to many award winning productions and Pallant House Gallery prides itself on being the home of Modern Art in the South.
In Chichester there are three secondary schools, Chichester High School for Boys, Chichester High School for Girls and Bishop Luffa Church of England School. The High Schools have a Sixth Form College which is currently the largest in West Sussex, offering a range of A-Level and vocational courses. Chichester also benefits from a College and University, which can trace its origins back to 1839.
There are a number of well equipped sports clubs, including Westgate Leisure Centre - with swimming pool and flume, Chichester Tennis and Racquets Club and Nuffield Health and Fitness. Chichester also has cricket, football and rugby clubs for both adults and children. There are several golf courses and driving ranges in the local area. Goodwood has a course currently ranked at number 77 in the Golf World Magazines top 100 English Courses and is "home" to the English PGA Championship. Chichester Yacht Club and the mariners at Itchenor, Birdham, Bosham attract the sailing community, and those who enjoy water-sports head to The Witterings for surfing.
There are restaurants in Chichester and the surrounding areas to suit all tastes, from house-hold names like Pizza Express, Brasserie Blanc and Carluccios to independent restaurants specialising in locally sourced and organic ingredients. There are plenty of cafes, bars, pubs and take-aways for people wanting to grab a coffee and pastry or a quick bite to eat. It is a shoppers dream with well known retailers and small boutiques. The recently re-furbished Butter Market and Little London Parade offer bespoke and niche shops, whilst the main streets have everything from Top Shop and Hollister to Laura Ashley and an Army and Navy department store ? with a brand new John Lewis at Home Store opening in 2012.
Chichester is easily accessed from the A27 which runs south of the City. The A27 connects Chichester to Worthing and Brighton (east-bound) and Havant, Portsmouth and Southampton (west-bound). London can be reached by motorway, making it popular for professionals looking for an easy commute. In addition, Chichester railway station has regular services to Gatwick Airport, London Victoria, Brighton, Southampton and Basingstoke.
