Living in Epsom
In recent years Epsom has emerged as a haven for commuters and families with its excellent transport links to central London and fantastic open countryside that dominates the surrounding area. It's vivacious past as a market town has often been overlooked by its rich heritage as the setting for the World's most famous flat horse race, "The Derby". The racing has helped influence the way that Epsom has grown with the Epsom Downs in the heart of the action. As trains became a frequent tourist to the Surrey hills, the area started to bloom with the population multiplying year after year. During the start of the roaring thirties many of the traditional properties that had stood so proudly in their environs, began to succumb to the ever popular developments that had started to spawn quickly, moving rapidly out of London and enveloping the South of England.
There is not a road in Epsom town that doesn't have some remnants of horse racing about it, be it either the name of the road, name of a Pub or even the faint sound in the distance on race day of thousands of excited horse racing fans screaming for their chosen horse to finish well. But believe it or not, there is much more to Epsom then just the racing. The Rainbow Leisure centre was completed in 2003 and offers the general public of Epsom & Ewell a 25 meter swimming pool, a 140 station gym and even an indoor bowling hall. The leisure centre is also currently undergoing a 1 million pound investment to include updating the male and female changing rooms, the sauna, steam and spa areas, and the creation of a new spinning, Pilates/yoga studio. When it comes to entertainment Epsom has many of the angles covered, with a cinema and theatres in the centre of town showing everything from the latest blockbuster to the traditional Christmas Panto, but if you would rather sit back and relax, then Epsom offers a huge selection of excellent restaurants and locally owned country pubs.
Officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen, The Ashley Centre in Epsom offers everything a modern shopping environment should, with the usual suspects of High Street shops but within a relaxed, friendly and safe shopping environment. With a choice of over 50 different shops and restaurants and parking for over 800 cars, The Ashley centre offers much more than the average large town.
Epsom's close proximity to London has always been one of its biggest selling points and with a train station in the middle of town that offers a direct link to both Waterloo and Victoria, its reputation as an ideal commuters home is no wonder. Epsom not only boasts a great train service but is located only a few minutes away from Junction 9 of the M25 which gives you the option of an easy motorway link with the whole of the country. By sitting so closely to the M25 this also gives you easy access to both London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports, situated only 20 or 30 miles respectively. Busses run throughout the day and connect with the neighbouring towns of Sutton, Kingston and Redhill. Bus services also carry on all the way to Mordon where you can pick up the London Underground.
