What's It Like To Live in Horsham?

Horsham is a traditional thriving market town situated in rural Sussex countryside, close to the Sussex Downs. Brighton is only 25 minutes' drive - the population of Horsham is around 45,000. Schooling - First class educational establishments include a boys secondary school (Forest Boy's School), a girl's secondary school (Millais School) and Tunbridge School. There is a wide choice of junior schools and a good 6th form college. Hospitals the nearest major hospital is the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath or Crawley for Accident and Emergency. There are also a couple of Health Centres in Horsham. Horsham Fire, Police and Law Courts are all located together.

Entertainment

Horsham Arts Centre is a buzzing, thriving entertainment centre offering a programme of drama, music, opera, light entertainment, films, exhibitions and much more. There are children's drama workshop and dance classes. Christ's Hospital Arts Centre offers a wide range of performances in a unique setting, including a 500 seat theatre in a courtyard style. Slightly further afield the major local theatre is the Hawth, in Crawley, which produces plays, concerts, ballet, outdoor festivals, pantomimes and film, as well as a fringe venue which regularly plays host to leading contemporary dance and drama companies, jazz, blues, folk and rock bands. In addition to all of this there are also some great annual events throughout the year; Piazza Italia during the Easter bank holiday, an English Festival in May, a French Festival in July, The Big Nibble event in early September coinciding with Horsham?s Festival of Sound and a Halloween Festival at the end of October.

Shopping

The town has regular specialist Italian and French markets held in Market Square in Carfax. The town centre is bustling every day of the week and Swan Walk shopping centre offers an excellent choice of everyone's favourite shops including Marks and Spencer, British Home Stores, Boots, Accessorise, Monsoon, Next and many more. TK Maxx and Cargo Home Store can be found in the Black Horse Way shopping complex.

Sports

Horsham boasts some excellent sporting and leisure centres. The District Council's flagship leisure centre is at Broadbridge Heath offering an outdoor athletics stadium, outside courts and pitches and a synthetic playing pitch. Indoors there is an athletics straight, badminton, basketball etc., a fitness suite and sports clinics. Elsewhere in Horsham there are public swimming pools, recreation centres and private clubs offering many different sports and coaching facilities. Of particular note is the sports complex at Christ's Hospital which offers private membership and excellent facilities for tennis and squash, swimming (indoor and outdoor pools) and a first class gymnasium. There are also several country parks in the area, Buchan Country Park with woodland glades and pond fishing, Southwater with its lake for fishing and boating and wildlife and Warnham Nature Reserve which provides valuable natural habitats for wildlife.

Restaurants

Horsham has a number of fantastic restaurants offering food to suit every taste. In East Street there is Wabi, which specialises in contemporary Japanese fine dining, there is a Wagamamas, Giraffe and Strada all offering Italian fair plus the French inspired Cote Bistro. On the edge of town is the Smith and Western which is a fun American style restaurant.

Communications

One of Horsham?s key features is its location. Brighton is just 20 miles away via the M23/A23. Regular trains run from the two main line railway stations offering services to London Victoria and London Bridge within approx 55 minutes. The M25 via the A24 and A23 / M23 provides direct routes to the South East, London and connect to the whole of the UK?s motorway network. Gatwick Airport is just 12 miles away and can be reached easily by either car or train.
