Plans to build 200 new homes on the site of an old fruit and vegetable market could be back on track, theargus.co.uk reports.
Originally, the old market location in Brighton's Circus Street was going to be developed into 200 new homes as well as shops and a library. A lack of finance after the credit crunch meant that the development didn't materialise, although now the proposals look set to be back on track.
After a re-think from developers the Cathedral Group, Brighton and Hove council has agreed on a more "financially viable" plan. Letting agents in the area may be pleased to see that new homes will still be built, alongside accommodation for around 400 students.
The new proposals, encompassing the former vegetable market, NCP car park and Circus Street annexe for the University of Brighton, could create 170 full-time jobs in the area and inject £150 million into the local economy over the next decade. Furthermore, the building work could also create around 100 jobs.
Speaking to sussexbusinesstimes.co.uk of the proposals, vice chancellor of the University of Brighton Julian Crampton explained: "We have long been active supporters of the need to regenerate this area of the city.
"The redevelopment of the site will enable us to enhance the activities and presence of the University of Brighton's Faculty of Arts, and signals a major investment by the university in the creative, cultural and digital sector for the city."
