Where is the perfect commuter home?

Wed 08 Apr 2015

Identifying the perfect place from which to commute to London can be tricky, as you try to balance good access to the capital with pleasant surroundings and reasonable property prices.

Moving away from London can make great financial sense, with new Savills figures reported by the Daily Telegraph showing commuters can save £2,610 on the price of a house for every minute they add to their journey.

From average house prices of £660,000 in the city itself, you will find that figure falls to £375,000 within the 20 to 29-minute commuter belt and to £231,000 in areas that are 80 to 89 minutes away from London.

There is clearly a huge saving to be made by picking a home a number of miles from your place of work, but where are the very best towns to buy in?

Within the 15 to 30-minute belt, properties in Buckinghamshire are among the most highly sought-after, with the newspaper picking out Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield as two examples of charming village life and idyllic settings within easy reach of London.

Only a few minutes away is High Wycombe, a town that boasts an affordable property market, modern facilities and family-friendly surroundings.

Looking slightly further afield, the Kent town of Sevenoaks is described as being part of a “golden halo” of commuter towns just outside the M25 to the south-east of London. With train links to the capital taking just 35 minutes and the beautiful Weald of Kent on the doorsteps it is no surprise to find this area is so popular.

To the north of London, living in St Albans remains a desirable option for many people, with this highly developed city offering impressive transport infrastructure and spacious family homes.

And of course, the classic commuter’s retreat is the seaside, so why not think about finding a property in Brighton or Eastbourne and letting the train take the strain each day?

With more than a dozen main lines heading into London and numerous motorways linking the city to the rest of the south-east, there are options open to you no matter what direction you opt to look in.
