Living in Hampshire
Hampshire is located on England's south coast, south-west of London and within easy reach of many key destinations.
Its county town is Winchester, although it is perhaps more widely recognised for its largest cities, Southampton and Portsmouth. Indeed, Hampshire is the most populous county in the UK, excluding metropolitan counties, with the South Hampshire conurbation one of the most densely populated in the country.
Other key towns in the region include Aldershot, Eastleigh, Fleet and Basingstoke, all of which offer excellent links to the capital and the rest of the county.
Hampshire is believed to have been occupied continuously since the end of the last Ice Age, when it was covered in deciduous woodland, although this began to subside by the Bronze Age. Some artefacts and landmarks from the latter period can still be found.
As well as historic cities and a vibrant cultural scene, Hampshire is renowned throughout the UK and beyond as the home of breathtaking countryside. To its western edge lies the New Forest, while it also boasts the South Downs – the UK's two newest national parks.
The county is one of the most affluent in the country and an extremely desirable place to live. The ports of Southampton and Portsmouth mean it has long been a trading hub, while Portsmouth is also the home of the Royal Navy and offers a large number of military jobs.
Thousands of commuters travel from Hampshire to London each day, with fast and reliable train services running to the capital from a range of towns. The A3 and M3 provide good road links.
Hampshire is the home of key historic figures such as legendary writers Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, while it was the birthplace of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The achievements of each are recognised in numerous ways throughout the county.
Whether you are seeking high-quality living in a fascinating and bustling city or in the heart of the English countryside, Hampshire is guaranteed to meet your needs.
