Living in Suffolk

Suffolk is one of the UK’s most historic counties and continues to offer a vibrant and diverse lifestyle to its near-750,000 residents.

From the economic hub of Ipswich to the port of Felixstowe, the beauty of Sudbury and the beautiful low-lying landscapes made famous by Constable, Suffolk is a region that has something to offer just about everybody.

Away from major towns, agriculture remains the major industry and the north of the county is also home to part of the Broads, which enjoys national park status and attracts more than seven million tourists each year. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths is just one of many locations to have been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The history of Suffolk dates back to at least the fifth century, when it was invaded by the Angles – after whom it is named – and they established control. The region was split between the north folk and those in the south, in areas that shared similar boundaries to where Norfolk and Suffolk stand today.

Today, Ipswich is the largest town in the county and is a popular choice among people looking to live in Suffolk or invest in a buy-to-let property there. However, it is by no means the only option, with areas such as Bury St Edmunds, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Woodbridge and Lowestoft offering an even more relaxed way of life and beautiful surroundings.

Among the key advantages of living in Suffolk are its excellent rail and road connections to London, its proximity to the world-famous Norfolk Broads and the good value found in the property market.

Suffolk is also blessed with a host of high-quality education institutions, including 14 independent schools. There are many other schools and colleges, while the Royal Hospital School is the largest boarding school in the county.

There is a strong sporting scene in the region, with Ipswich Town FC competing in the second tier of English football. Ipswich Witches featuring in the national speedway leagues and Newmarket widely considered to be the home of British horse racing.
