Living in Surrey

Surrey is one of the most desirable counties in England, located in the south-east just a short distance from London and bordering Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire.

The county is split approximately in half by the North Downs, a large chalk ridge that runs from east to west. This landscape also features the rivers Wey and Mole, both of which are tributaries of the Thames and provide wonderful surroundings for walkers, cyclists and watersports enthusiasts.

In total, 11 districts make up the modern Surrey, with these including spots such as Epsom and Ewell, Woking, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede and Waverley. The county town is Guildford.

About 1.1 million people currently live in Surrey, with the largest towns in the region being Guildford, Woking and Ewell.

Looking back in history, the area now known as Surrey dates back to before the Roman times, when it is believed that the Atrebates tribe occupied the land from its base at Calleva Atrebatum in neighbouring Hampshire.

They remained allies with the Romans during their invasion of Britain in AD 43 and Roman temples were soon built in areas such as Wanborough and Farley Heath.

Today, Surrey is one of the greenest and most upmarket counties in the country, with its small and quaint towns surrounded by magnificent countryside. It is also extremely popular with commuters, who wish to live in its pleasant environment while remaining just a short train ride or drive from central London.

It is well served by both the train network and roads, with a significant portion of the M25, M3 and M23 motorways passing through the county. It is also within a short distance of Heathrow and Gatwick airports, which is ideal for both business and leisure travellers.

In the north of Surrey, some of the most delightful places to live include the riverside locations of Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames, as well as Kingston and Sutton.

To the centre and south of the county, spots such as Cranleigh, Dorking, Leatherhead, Guildford and Godalming are among the most popular with those seeking a home or an investment property.
