Living in West Sussex
West Sussex is located in the south of England and borders East Sussex to the east, Hampshire to the west and Surrey to the north.
It has a long and fascinating history, with its origins lying in the Kingdom of Sussex. It was declared a single ceremonial county in 1974 following the implementation of the Local Government Act 1972.
Today, its largest towns include Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, East Grinstead, Crawley, Worthing, Arundel and Horsham. Such locations provide a range of housing options to young couples, families, professionals and older individuals, so there truly is something for everybody in West Sussex.
Chichester is the county town and the only city in West Sussex. Elsewhere, the county is known for its splendid countryside, with highlights including parts of the South Downs and the Weald. There are also long stretches of unspoiled coastline that are perfect for a summer stroll or a lengthy hike.
Indeed, more than half of West Sussex’s land is protected countryside, so everybody who opts to live there can be sure they will never be far from an attractive green space. Interspersed within the rural beauty are a number of historic and eye-catching buildings, such as Arundel Castle, Petworth House and Goodwood.
The latter is also known for its popular racecourse and annual motor festival. In fact, West Sussex is a joy for horse racing enthusiasts, as it also boasts the magnificent Fontwell.
Excellent schools are available throughout the county, while commuter links to London and other areas of the south-east are extremely good. This makes West Sussex the ideal family base, with plenty of large houses available at reasonable rates on the rental and sales markets.
Gatwick Airport, located just minutes from Crawley, is a source of economic prosperity and jobs in the county and many large businesses are based in the vicinity of it. This makes Crawley, East Grinstead and Horsham useful places for a home and lucrative investment options.
