This week is Big Energy Saving Week (18-22 January), a national campaign by Citizens Advice and Energy Saving Trust to help you cut your energy bills and get all the financial support you are entitled to.

There are often many changes you can implement to help make your property more energy efficient, which in turn means you, or your tenants, can save energy, cut bills and be more environmentally friendly. We shared some of these changes in a recent blog.

However, were you aware of the Government’s Green Homes Grant? If you’re a homeowner or a residential landlord, you can apply for a voucher to spend on installing energy efficient improvements to your home.

The vouchers will cover two-thirds of the cost of eligible improvements, up to a maximum Government contribution of £5,000.

If you, or someone in your household, receive certain benefits you may be eligible for a voucher covering 100% of the cost of the improvements (with a maximum value of £10,000). This part is only available to homeowners though, and not landlords.

The voucher must be used to install at least 1 primary energy efficient measure, a primary measure is defined by the Government as some type of insulation, or low carbon heating measure.

If this costs less than the amount of the voucher, any remaining spend can be used on a secondary measure, which is defined by the Government as heating controls (such as smart heating) or windows and doors (e.g. double glazing).

Vouchers must be redeemed and improvements completed by 31 March 2022. Green Homes Grant installers can continue to work in people’s homes during lockdown, providing they follow Covid-19 secure guidelines.
