There's something about autumn that makes you want your home to feel a little more cosy. As the evenings get darker and the temperature drops, we're naturally drawn towards softer lighting, warm blankets and spaces that feel comfortable and inviting.
But when you're renting, completely transforming your home isn't always an option. You may not be able to paint the walls, replace flooring or make permanent changes to the space.
The good news is that you don't need to. There are plenty of simple ways to give your rental an autumnal feel without decorating or making major changes.
Bring in softer lighting
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel cosier is to change the lighting.
As the days get shorter, switch off harsh overhead lights where possible and use lamps to create softer pools of light around the room.
A table lamp beside the sofa, a floor lamp in an empty corner or a small bedside lamp can completely change how a room feels in the evening.
If you already have lamps around your home, try moving them into different positions to see how the space changes.
Add plenty of texture
You don't need to change your colour scheme to make a room feel warmer.
Adding different textures can make a big difference. Think knitted throws, soft cushions, fluffy rugs and heavier bedding.
Drape a blanket over the back of your sofa or place a couple of cushions on an armchair to create a more inviting space.
The best part for renters? These are temporary changes that can be packed away or switched around whenever you want.

Layer up your bedding
Your bedroom can be one of the easiest rooms to give an autumn refresh.
As the weather gets cooler, swap lightweight summer bedding for something warmer and layer up with blankets or a throw.
You could also introduce autumnal colours through your bedding rather than changing anything permanent in the room. Deep greens, warm neutrals, rusts and burgundy can all give a room a seasonal feel.
Make the sofa the centre of your cosy space
As evenings become darker, your sofa is likely to become a much more important part of your home.
Make it somewhere you actually want to spend time by adding a comfortable throw, a few cushions and perhaps a small side table for books, drinks or a cup of tea.
You don't need lots of accessories. Sometimes simply making one corner of your home feel particularly comfortable is enough to change the atmosphere of the whole room.

Add a rug
If your rental has hard flooring, a rug can instantly make a room feel softer and warmer underfoot.
It can also help define different areas in an open-plan room without making any permanent changes.
Choose something that works with your existing furniture and keep the size appropriate for the space. A smaller rug can work particularly well underneath a coffee table or beside the bed.
Bring nature indoors
Autumn is one of the best seasons for bringing natural elements into your home.
A vase of seasonal branches, a few houseplants or a simple bowl of pine cones can add interest without requiring any decorating.
If you don't want to spend money on new accessories, look at what you already have around your home. Moving existing plants, pictures or ornaments into different rooms can make your space feel refreshed without buying anything new.
Make your windows feel warmer
Windows can make a room feel noticeably colder once the temperature drops.
If your rental already has curtains or blinds, make sure you're using them effectively. Closing curtains as the evening gets colder can help create a cosier atmosphere.
You could also add removable curtains if your tenancy allows it and the existing setup makes this possible without damaging the property.
Just make sure curtains aren't covering radiators when your heating is on, as this can affect how effectively warm air circulates around the room.

Create a cosy evening routine
Making your home feel cosy isn't just about what it looks like.
Autumn is a good excuse to create little routines that make being at home feel more enjoyable.
You might make a cup of tea when you finish work, put on some music, read for half an hour or cook something warming for dinner.
Even something as simple as switching on a lamp and putting a blanket on the sofa can create that feeling that the day is winding down.
Don't forget the smaller spaces
You don't have to transform your entire rental.
A small reading corner, your bedside table or even a windowsill can become a cosy little area with just a few thoughtful additions.
This can be particularly useful if you're renting a smaller flat or house. Instead of trying to make the whole property feel different, focus on the spaces you use most.
Make autumn your excuse to enjoy your rental
Renting doesn't mean you can't make your home feel like your own.
You might not be able to repaint the walls or install a new kitchen, but small changes can still make a surprisingly big difference. A warmer blanket, softer lighting, a rug and a few personal touches could be all you need to make your rental feel like a cosy place to come home to this autumn.
