Where is the happiest place to live in the UK?
11th November 2019

The happiest people in the UK have been revealed as those living in the Essex town of Leigh-on-Sea.

A new survey asked residents from across the country to rate their hometown in 12 different categories, including community spirit, safety, sports and recreational facilities, local services and the ability to earn enough to live comfortably.

Leigh-on-Sea was followed by Troon, Harrogate, Hertford, Lytham St Annes, Shepperton, Stanford-Le-Hope, Shrewsbury, Hitchin and Woodbridge as the top 10 happiest places to live.

Allison Thompson, managing director at property specialist Leaders, says: “The findings show a range of different factors make people happy in various areas. From easy access to beaches and parks to friendly neighbours and the standard of local schools and doctors, people look for different things in the place they choose to make their home.

“Leigh-on-Sea scored highly for its strong sense of belonging and excellent community spirit, while it also suggests living by the sea can have a positive influence on residents.

“It’s also no surprise that towns with plenty of open spaces and recreational facilities fared well. People often look for space when they are moving, so properties close to parks and countryside will always be in high demand.”

The survey was conducted by Rightmove and saw almost 24,000 people across the UK questioned as part of its Happy at Home Index.

Allison adds: “When it comes to finding a place to live, we always advise people to identify their priorities and search for a property that meets these requirements. So while a young professional may be willing to compromise on space in order to secure a stylish city centre apartment close to the station, a family is more likely to be interested in the location of schools and the size of the garden.

“There is no right or wrong answer in buying or renting a property, so every individual should follow their heart.”
